A flat abrasive tool has a working surface that is entirely planar and it can be utilized on flat or nearly flat workpieces uniformly throughout the surface. Certain grinding wheels and flat faced sanding blocks are used in this category. Fitted into sanders, it serves to sand wooden boards, making the surface smooth and even for painting or joining parts. Similarly, in metalworking, flat metal sheets can be ground to specific thicknesses which can be smooth for plating. As a result of the broad geometry, abrasive operations are more easily controlled and the pressure applied is uniformly distributed improving the uniformity of the workpiece surface finish.
