Grinding nickel alloys is particularly complex because of their high tensile strength, heat and corrosion resistance. Nevertheless, there exists a grinding wheel designed specifically for the difficulties posed by nickel based alloys. For instance, the abrasives included in these wheels like CBN or diamond are able to cut tough alloys. The bond that holds the abrasive grains in place will withstand the extreme temperature and pressure conditions created during grinding. These wheels are widely used by the aerospace and power generation industries because of the turbine blades and engine casings made from these materials. Such components must have extremely accurate geometric and surface quality features for proper fit and function. These components must be ground and polished to very precise performance standards.
